Bobbe's Story

On March 10, 2010, Bob went for his usual daily 7 mile run around the beautiful Magnolia neighborhood in Seattle, where he lives. He was feeling good that day, thankful that his painting business was doing well again, after a slow period that came with the economic down turn. He also felt blessed that his wife Frances was healthy and finally able to drive a bit on local streets, following major brain surgery in 2009 that left her with impaired vision.

The next day Bobbe went for his annual physical exam and told the doctor he’d been experiencing slight pain in the upper chest at times. A CT scan showed fluid in his right lung. One week later, Bob and Frances received the shocking news that Bob has Stage IV lung cancer. He had a very encouraging chemotherapy treatment in late April, with care given by Dr. Laura Chow of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). Bob and Frances along with their friends and family felt quite encouraged, and started to plan supportive visits and meals for the upcoming chemotherapy treatments.

About three weeks after the first chemotherapy, Bob was unable to breathe, and was hospitalized with blood clots in both lungs. These may have developed as a result of the treatment, or the cancer. He has been unable to resume chemotherapy since that time.

Since mid-May, Bob has twice more been admitted to UW Hospital due to severe nausea, now known to be caused by stomach cancer. He has needed, and will continue to need, all medicine and sustenance administered through an intravenous line.
